Grant Programs Make Awesome Things Happen

Three Types of Funding Available to Help Make Your Community Initiative Thrive

Jump start your Calgary or Okotoks community initiative with a little help from First Calgary Financial! There are three types of grants available:

Stepping Stones Grant, in partnership with The Calgary Foundation

‚ÄčThese small grants encourage active citizenship by helping residents undertake small, creative project that benefit their local community.

  • Funding Between $100 - $600
  • Applications accepted from individual organizers, neighbourhood groups and charitable organizations
  • Applications due by midnight of the 1st of every month
  • Supports projects that:
    • Encourage Calgarians to be more involved in their local neighbourhoods and communities
    • Build on participants' interests, concerns and talents
    • Welcome and involve a diversity of people and groups
    • Take people's ideas into action
    • Demonstrate and develop local leadership
    • Create new opportunities

Act Local Program

These sponsorships support grassroots projects and events making an impact in local neighbourhoods surrounding First Calgary Financial branches.

  • Sponsorships of up to $4,000
  • Applications accepted from non-profit organization, societies, charities, cooperatives, and social enterprises
  • Organizations must have values that are consistent with the mission and values of First Calgary Financial
  • Employees and branches are empowered to make decisions locally, both in terms of helping members and which organizations we choose to support

Supports projects and events that take place in a community surrounding one of our branches AND make an impact in one of our four focus areas:

  • Builds community pride and revitalization
  • Supports entrepreneurship & skills training
  • Provides financial education and inclusion
  • Affordable housing

Community Grants

These larger grants are for projects or programs working to make a social impact within at least one of the four community focus areas supported by First Calgary Financial.

  • Grants of $2,500 up to $10,000
  • Applications accepted from associations, societies, charities, cooperatives, and social enterprises
  • Applications deadline occurs in the late summer. Upcoming deadline: August 1, 2018
  • Organizations must have values that are consistent with the mission and values of First Calgary Financial

Projects and events must make an impact in one of our four focus areas:

  • Supports entrepreneurship & skills training
  • Provides financial education and inclusion
  • Affordable housing
  • Builds community pride and revitalization

Application Requirements, Selection Process and Conditions of Funding

Stepping Stones Grant Program

The Stepping Stones Grant does NOT provide funding for:

  • Projects that have occurred before the granting decision is made.
  • Salary, equipment that could be borrowed or items that could be donated by other sources. (Stepping Stones helps with expenses that support community involvement. Items such as room rental, refreshments, arts supplies, sound equipment rental, for example, could qualify)
  • Block parties or other purely social events or fundraisers unless they have a clear plan to create further opportunities for the neighbourhood or community.
  • Projects that are receiving grants from The Calgary Foundation’s partner grassroots granting programs (Calgary Dollars' Take Action Grants and Northern Lights Small Grants Initiative); or are receiving funds from First Calgary Financial’s local community sponsorship program. 
  • Projects in any neighbourhood with their own dedicated granting programs – such as Bowness’ Ripples grant. (we ask that you tap into those dedicated resources first, or as well, depending upon project size)

 

Application and Selection Process

  • Applications must be submitted through the online Stepping Stones Application Form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Applications due by midnight of the 1st of every month.
  • Applicants will be contacted within three weeks with follow-up questions and then application results. 
  • Allow at least six weeks between the application due date and your project event/activity for the grant decision and subsequent paperwork.

 

Limitations and Conditions

  • Successful applicants must submit a post project survey on the success of the project/event.
  • Organizations that received funding in prior years must submit a report before being considered for funding in subsequent years.
  • Grant recipients are expected to appropriately recognize the Calgary Foundation and First Calgary Financial's contribution.

 

The Act Local Program

The Act Local program does NOT provide funding for:

  • Large-scale city-wide initiatives (these are better suited to a Community Grant!)
  • Individuals or private businesses
  • Political parties and affiliated activities
  • Activities with a specific religious focus
  • Projects and programs taking place outside of Calgary
  • National initiatives
  • Health-related causes 
  • Individual sports teams
  • Capital Campaigns or Infrastructure costs

 

Application and Selection Process

  • Applications must be submitted through the online Act Local program Application Form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Funding is limited and preference is given to events and activities occurring within the neighbourhoods surrounding the First Calgary Financial branches that provide opportunities for our branch employees to get involved beyond the donation.
  • Notifications of your application status will be provided within eight weeks of the application submission.
  • The funds we approve are reported to our members and to the community.

 

Limitations and Conditions

  • Successful applicants must submit a post project survey on the success of the project/event, based on the objectives you identified in your application
  • Organizations that received funding in prior years must submit a report before being considered for funding in subsequent years.
  • Grant recipients are expected to appropriately recognize First Calgary Financial's contribution.
     

Community Grants

Community Grants does NOT provide funding for:
Neighborhood specific initiatives (these are better suited to the Act Local Program!)

  • Projects and programs taking place outside of Calgary
  • Events
  • Fundraisers
  • Individuals or private businesses
  • Political parties and affiliated activities
  • Activities with a specific religious focus
  • Health-related causes 
  • Individual sports teams
  • Capital campaigns or infrastructure costs

Application and Selection Process

  • Applications must be submitted through the online Community Grant Application Form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Applications are assessed and approved by First Calgary Financial Community Grants Committee twice a year.
  • Applications are assessed primarily for their strong fit with our community investment focus areas and their potential to make a positive contribution to social change.
  • Funding is limited and preference is given to active members of First Calgary Financial.
  • Notifications of your application status will be provided within eight weeks of the application deadline.
  • The grants we approve are reported to our members and to the community.

 

Limitations and Conditions

  • Only one community grant per year per organization is permitted.
  • Successful applicants must complete a post-project survey - automatically be sent upon project completion - that reports on the overall success of your project and on the metrics you set in your application. 
  • Organizations that received funding in prior years must submit a report before being considered for funding in subsequent years.
  • Grant recipients are expected to appropriately recognize First Calgary Financial's contribution.
